Hidden Legend of Baltimore: Jacquelyn Clemmons

Jacquelyn is a Birth and Traditional Postpartum Doula, Usui Reiki Master, and Author at De La Luz Wellness. She's a Baltimore based Mother of 3 with a passion for all around wellness and healing. Her company is designed to be a vehicle to empower birthing people and their families to activate their inner warrior and personal magic along their birthing journey.

How are you impacting your community?

I am impacting our community by providing intuitive, knowledgeable, and loving birth support which results in positive birth outcomes. I am doing my part to make sure that black birthing people are advocated for every step of the way. Whether it's walking alongside a new doula mentoring them, or gently guiding a laboring mama through a meditation, my heart and soul is in each interaction. I believe that every ripple counts and purpose to make the most of what I send out.

What advice would you give to someone looking to follow your path in the industry?

I encourage anyone looking to begin a career as a birthworker to consider why they want to do this work. Birth is a deeply sacred and divine moment for families and being grounded in your why will help keep you when tough situations arise. Seek out knowledge and understanding that reflects your culture and your people and surround yourself with others committed to the work. Be open to learning for the rest of your life! Birth is unpredictable, so be adaptable and flexible and most of all develop your intuition....you'll need it.

What separates you from your competitors?

My ability to tap in to the "deeper places" of the families i serve sets me apart. We all have many layers and masks that we wear. Labor and the Postpartum period are two of the most vulnerable times for any family. My intuition plays a large role in knowing how to support each family, not just with services, but on a heart level.
